WASHINGTON – Over two years after the December 2010 flooding throughout Washington County, flood rehabilitation work is finally being done near the bridge on Washington Fields Road.
Lester Dalton, a project manager for Washington City, said money from emergency funds from the federal government finally came which allowed the city to begin the flood rehab work. “It’s been a long three years,” he said.
Dalton said the purpose of the work near the bridge includes erosion control and removing sediment that was left behind by the 2010 floods. A temporary dam is also being constructed in order to divert the Virgin River away from a part of the work area.
The emergency funds are connected to roadway infrastructure, Dalton said, and were granted to the city from the Utah Department of Transportation – which ultimately came from the Federal Highway Administration. He said the city is working with various federal and state agencies on the flood rehab, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
