SALT LAKE CITY — A year ago, the fourth-seeded Dixie Flyers went up to Judge Memorial with a plan: Hang close until the fourth quarter and then make a move. It worked perfectly as Dixie upset the heavily-favored Bulldogs en route to a semifinal appearance.
The plan may have been similar this year, but it was Judge that made the big move in the fourth quarter and the result was a convincing and avenging 54-40 win for the Bulldogs.
Joe Cremer had 14 points and Judge outscored Dixie by 10 in the final quarter to roll to the win. The Bulldogs captured their seventh straight win and 19th of the season and advance to the quarterfinals at Weber State to take on Bear River Thursday morning. Dixie ends the season 9-14.
Judge scored 26 points in the final quarter as Cremer got hot from outside, hitting three 3-pointers. Dixie couldn’t match the intensity or the shooting prowess it had displayed Tuesday night against Snow Canyon.
The big run came right out of the gates in the final stanza, with the Bulldogs scoring eight unanswered to push a 28-24 lead to 36-24. Dixie could never make up the difference.
Kyle Hansen finished with his second highest career total in points with 17, including a pair of 3-pointers. Kyler Smith added 11, but no other Dixie player had more than three points.
After racking up 70 points on Pine View Jan. 11, the Flyers lost five of their final eight games and never topped the 60-point plateau again.
