Dixie State accounting students provide free tax assistance to the community

ST. GEORGE – Students in Dixie State College of Utah’s four-year accounting program will once again provide free personal tax assistance to the community during this year’s tax preparation season.

The Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program is designed to assist low and middle-income individuals of all ages with a wide range of tax return scenarios. Services will be provided free of charge by DSC accounting students who have completed IRS certification programs. DSC accounting faculty, who are also IRS certified, will supervise. Taxpayers’ completed federal and state returns will be filed to the IRS and applicable states.

Participating taxpayers should bring social security cards for each individual appearing on their tax returns, wage and earning statements from all employers, SSA-1099s showing social security benefits and all types of 1099 forms; 1099-B forms should be accompanied by supporting documentation showing original asset purchase prices and sales proceeds. Taxpayers should also bring Form 1098, documenting their mortgage interest, mortgage insurance payments, property tax payments, documentation to verify medical expenses, charitable contributions and child care payments, a copy of their 2011 tax return and any other documents related to their income and deductions. Taxpayers desiring an automatic deposit of their refunds should also bring their bank account and routing numbers.

The services will be held in Room 127 of the Udvar-Hazy Business Building every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Services begin Feb. 5 and will continue through April 11, with the exception of spring break from Mar. 11-15.

During the 2012 tax season, DSC students provided more than 4,500 hours of community service, 621 of which were devoted to obtaining IRS certification. Students assisted 1,808 clients file federal and state returns, facilitating the return of over $3.6 million back to the community.
