Streaking Cedar defeats Pine View for ninth straight win

CEDAR CITY  – Dustin Staggs scored 24 points and Cedar collected its ninth consecutive victory Friday in a 57-46 win over Pine View.

The game was close through three quarters and neither team managed a double-digit lead until Cedar pulled away in the fourth quarter to survive and remain in first place in Region 9.

“We were able to get some steals and layups,” Cedar coach Craig Cardon said. “We made a couple shots down the stretch and we were fortunate to steal that one.”

Dallin Milne led Pine View with 17 points and Jack Bangerter added 11 points and the Panthers led after the first quarter. But true to form this season, Cedar battled back and eventually sealed the victory in the final period. Mike Hourigan recorded a double-double for the Redmen with 10 points and 10 assists.

Despite being on the verge of a 10-game win streak, Cardon insists his team isn’t satisfied.

“We haven’t done anything yet,” Cardon said. “We haven’t qualified for the tournament. We haven’t secured home court. We have everything in the world to play for. We understand where we are and what’s at stake. We want to host a playoff game.”

The league-leading Redmen improve to 6-0 in Region 9 action and take on Desert Hills on Wednesday. Pine View falls to 2-4 and has a week off before a matchup with Hurricane on Friday.
