ST. GEORGE – Dixie State College of Utah recently expanded the institution’s study-abroad program and offerings and has announced plans for four international trips next summer.
DSC is inviting students and community members alike who have the desire to study abroad to take advantage of the opportunity. An annual popular trip led by geology associate professor Kelly Bringhurst, students will tour the tropical rainforests and jungles of Costa Rica and learn about the more than one million plant and animal species living there. A trip to China, hosted by assistant professor of philosophy Dr. Hyrum LaTurner, takes students to the birthplace of Confucianism to learn a better appreciation of Chinese political thought and culture, coupled with visits to Beijing, the Great Wall and other famous sites.
Also new for this coming summer is a trip to the Dolomite region of Italy, where students will study the geological features of the area, along with excursions to several cultural sites and museums. For the art lover, the “holy grail of art trips,” a 20-day European excursion led by art professor Glen Blakley, will include visits to London, Paris, Rome and Florence, along with a cruise to the Greek Islands.
DSC Executive Director of Enrollment Services David Ross said that the school has offered various study-abroad programs in the past, but noted that a more concerted effort is taking place this year to offer students a wider menu of choices. Several professors have stepped up to create comprehensive and memorable study-abroad experiences.
“Faculty-led excursions are a great way to go,” Roos said. “Students are earning college credit (and) going with a professor who knows his or her way around.”
Most of the trips will take place in May 2013. Applications are currently being accepted, with a first payment deposit due by Jan. 15. Students can use their financial aid, if eligible, to help with tuition and other expenses. Those interested in taking the courses for personal enrichment rather than college credit can still register by “auditing” the course for no grade.
