Local businesses collaborate for Red Cross fundraiser, benefiting Sandy victims

ST. GEORGE – Petrosie and Sons Handyman Service, in coordination with Jack in the Box and Players’ Sports Grill, will host a “Fill the Bucket” fundraising drive for the American Red Cross Disaster Relief this Saturday.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., volunteers will be in the vicinity of Jack in the Box and Players’ Sports Grill on South Convention Center Drive in St. George to collect donations with canisters and buckets. All of the funds raised will be given to the American Red Cross.

Brian and Teresa Petrosie, owners of Petrosie and Sons Handyman Service, live in St. George but are both New Jersey natives. They coordinated a successful drive in the aftermath of 9/11 and are optimistic for a good turnout this time. Both have fond memories of growing up on the Jersey Shore and are saddened by the devastation left by the recent Hurricane Sandy.

“We still have friends and family there and our hearts go out to them,” Brian Petrosie said.

The Red Cross is on the ground providing food, shelter, supplies and comfort to people affected by Hurricane Sandy. Nearly 5,900 Red Cross workers (including two from Southern Utah) are assigned to operations from North Carolina and Rhode Island, with the majority still in New York and New Jersey. Since the beginning of the operation, the Red Cross has provided more than 61,000 overnight stays in hundreds of Red Cross shelters and over 3.2 million meals have been served. Over 121,000 relief items, including shipments of hypothermic blankets, hand and foot warmers, hats, gloves, ponchos and socks are being distributed.

The Red Cross helps people affected by disasters like Hurricane Sandy, as well as countless crises around the world. Donations to Red Cross Disaster Relief helps prepare for and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance in the wake of disasters. Donations can be made anytime online.

What a great event for a great cause. My husband and I are from Far Rockaway, Queens, NY and we have been suffering ever since Sandy hit with our community and all of the East Coast. Bravo to the Petrosies for never forgetting where they came from.
