HURRICANE – Local Antique dealers Fred and Sue Thomas will get their 15 minutes of fame tonight on the History Channel series Pawn Stars. Rick Harrison, one of the stars of the show, stopped by on his way Sturgis, and filmed a segment about their shop, Ugly Trailor Antiques.
Producers for the show discovered the local shop on the internet and called the owners earlier this year to arrange a time to film and interview in the shop. The 22,000 square-foot location features a stuffed tiger, a 1901 self-playing piano, an old county jail, and a myriad of other collectibles and antiques. With so much history packing under one roof, it is almost as much a museum as it is a store.
The trailer, which the shop is named after, was used in the 1978 film “The Electric Horseman,” which starred Robert Redford, Jane Fonda, Wilford Brimley, and Willie Nelson; and was filmed in this area.
This month Ugly Trailor Antiques celebrates its third anniversary of being open, and continues to expand to take in more merchandise and consignment booths. The hype of being on a popular TV series has brought hundreds of people into the shop, and more are expected after the airing of Pawn Stars tonight.
“They were only planning on being here for 3 to 4 hours,” Sue Thomas said. “They filmed for 6 hours and they were here for 8 (hours), and they loved us!”
What was once a small shop that was simply a pass-through location has now grown to be a destination, and an increasing number of people are taking notice. Fans of both the show and the shop are stopping by, people are flowing in through Facebook and other social media, and people traveling through the area have made it a point to visit the shop and see what it is all about.
“We are becoming a destination rather than a stop on the way to Zion,” Fred Thomas said. “We are getting people from all over the world saying ‘we heard about you and had to come and see you.’ We get a lot of really positive comments about our store.”
By nature of the industry, the Ugly Trailor Antiques shop has a constantly revolving inventory, and attracts serious collectors and casual browsers alike. Patrons are encouraged to browse around, and are bound to find something they find interesting.
Ugly Trailor Antiques is located at 25 East State Street, in Hurricane. The Sturgis episode of Pawn Stars will air tonight at 8 p.m. on the History Channel. Some TV providers may vary in airing time.
