They split a pair of matches this year in Region 9 play, but the third meeting between Desert Hills and Snow Canyon will mean so much more.
The Warriors and Thunder square off tonight for the 3A Volleyball State Championship at 8 p.m. at Utah Valley University’s McKay Events Center.
Desert Hills earned its trip to the finals first, defeating Region 12 champion Delta in a sweep, 25-17, 25-23, 25-22. The morning match was a quick one and left the Thunder to watch and wait as region rival Snow Canyon took on defending state champion Morgan in a 12:30 p.m. match.
The Lady Trojans, led by legendary coach Liz Wiscombe, won state last season and was a perfect 12-0 in Region 11. Wiscombe led her teams at Delta and Morgan to 18 state titles.
Meanwhile, Snow Canyon had to settle for second place last season in state to Morgan and second in region this season to Desert Hills.
It was a marquee match-up, though, that didn’t live up to the hype. The Lady Warriors trounced Morgan by sweeping three games, none of which were particularly close. The final score: 25-15, 25-20, 25-15.

Two other Region 9 teams played well today. Hurricane earned sixth place with wins over Tooele and Spanish Fork. Dixie beat Judge Memorial and will play Juan Diego for fifth place.
