WOU wows Dixie State on record night

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Mitch Frei set a career high in receiving yards for Dixie State College, but Western Oregon topped the individual effort by accumulating the most single-game team yards in school history in a 66-20 Great Northwest Athletic Conference game at McArthur Field.

The 696-yard effort also led to the most points put up by the Wolves (4-3, 4-2 GNAC) since their move to the NCAA Division-II ranks. Dixie State (3-4, 3-3 GNAC) also allowed the most yards in any single game during the NCAA era (previous high was 591 yards at Humboldt State on Nov. 1. 2011).

Frei caught seven passes for 129 yards, including a 39-yard touchdown from Griff Robles that pulled the Storm within 11 points, 31-20. The Wolves, who scored the first 21 points of the game all in the first quarter, closed scoring the game’s final 35 points.

“It was good to get the touches,” Frei said. “In the end, it doesn’t mean much when we get beat by 40. That’s the frustrating part.”

Frustrations set in early as Western Oregon quarterback Cody VonAppen hit Tyrell Williams on the second play from scrimmage for 71-yard score.

“When you’re playing a good team like them, you have to capitalize on things early,” head coach Scott Brumfield said. “That did not happen today. It is an embarrassing loss.”

Before the Red Storm could regain composure, Kenneth Haynes added a 25-yard run and the Wolves recovered the ensuing onside kick. Tight end Mark Moore brought in a six-yard catch to end the first quarter at 21-0.

Robles entered the game for Dixie State’s fourth drive after starter Kale Nawahine completed just two of six attempts and led the squad to just 32 yards offense. In the drive, Robles completed all three passes he attempted. The final toss to Andre Aron led the speedy receiver to the end zone.

Western seized back momentum two drives later when Von Appen hit flanker Tyler Davis on the sideline. A few broken tackles and nifty footwork later, Davis had found the endzone for a 94 yard score.

DSC used the game’s longest drive to score a late first half touchdown. Sixteen plays for 92 yards ended with a one-yard toss to Kamuela Alisa. The Wolves ended the half with a 31-13 lead as Kelly Morgan blasted a short field goal at the horn.

Robles ended the day 24-of-45 for 276 yards, three touchdowns and two picks. VonAppen went for 424 yards through the air. WOU had two receivers and a running back over the century mark – Williams (197), Davis (106) and Joe Harris (128).

Defensively, Cameron Greene had 10 tackles with Matt Tanuvasa and Jake Duncan each adding six.

Dixie State hits the road again next Saturday against the Lumberjacks of Humboldt State. Kickoff from the Redwood Bowl is at 6 p.m. Pacific (7 p.m. Mountain).
