GRAND CANYON, Ariz. – On Tuesday, Oct. 9, at approximately 11:45 a.m. the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of a motor vehicle accident on Highway 67 just outside of the park.
Rangers responded to the accident as a cooperating agency planning to assist the Arizona Department of Public Safety. When they arrived on scene, rangers found the vehicle on its side approximately 2.5 miles south of the entrance station, inside of Grand Canyon National Park.
The driver of the vehicle, 57-year-old Carol Cook of Woodbine, Md., died at the scene. Her passenger was transported to Kane County Hospital in Kanab, Utah, where he is being treated for minor injuries.
Preliminary indications are that the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree causing the vehicle to roll on to its side. The driver and passenger were both wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident.
