ST. GEORGE — Not everyone is thinking football this time of year as the 1A Fall Baseball schools crowned a champion at Dixie State’s Bruce Hurst Field Saturday afternoon.
Panguitch completed a storybook season by winning the state championship 15-5 over Piute. The win was the Bobcats 23rd of the year without a single loss.
“There’s a lot of pressure when you are undefeated like this,” Panguitch coach Clint Barney said. “I had a similar situation to this on 2006. We were 22-0 going the state championship game in Cedar City and we lost to Waterford. I’d like to say this is vindication for what happened in ’06. But I’ll never forget that year.”
The Bobcats captured their second straight state baseball title and pitcher Dalan Bennett will likely get his second straight 1A MVP award. He pitched the complete-game victory for Panguitch in the championship and has also had a perfect season on the mound.
It was a busy sports day in St. George with the St. George Marathon, the 1A baseball Tournament and a home Dixie State football game.
Panguitch fans were unswayed by the busy city, with one fan calling it “a dream day and a dream tournament.”
West Ridge Academy (from West Jordan) and Tabiona were also in town for the baseball tournament.
