ST. GEORGE – The Gina Jrel Fine Art and Design Studio will unveil its dark side at the Ferocious Beauty art show on Oct. 13.
Ferocious Beauty is Jrel’s first exhibition following a three-year creative block. Those acquainted with her work should expect the new pieces to be drastically different from anything else she has created in her 34-year career.
Inspired by Jrel’s subconscious thoughts, Ferocious Beauty highlights meticulously rendered realism, poster-like stylization and whimsical gesture lines. The paintings are mostly black and white, with only a few splashes of color to portray her embrace of her dark side and transition into the light.
“I think it’s (the) best body of work I’ve ever done,” Jrel said. “These paintings are really different and really raw. Everything about the painting and creative process is different from (what) I’ve ever done before.”
The show will also feature similarly themed exhibitions from local artists Debra Proball and Matt Clark.
A jewelry artist, Proball will show her new jewelry collection, “Linking the Dark and Light.” Each piece is predominantly black, white and silver, and made from carefully selected semiprecious stones.
Clark, a contemporary sculptor, will reveal his latest collection, “Dark Nights of the Soul.” The works are a portrayal of the dark events in people’s lives that rock their souls, including depression, abuse and death. They symbolize the transcendence that leads individuals back into the light.
Ferocious Beauty is a masquerade event. Participants are encouraged to arrive in costume and mask, though it is not required.
