NWS Alert: Fire weather watch for the weekend

Update 3 p.m. on Sept. 22, 2012:  This alert has been cancelled by the National Weather Service as pertains to the Color Country west desert (Zone 495). It remains in effect for the other zones described.

SOUTHERN UTAH – The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City has issued a fireweather watch for wind and low relative humidity which is in effect from Sunday morning through sunday evening.

• Affected areas: Fire weather zone 478, Salt Lake desert; fire weather zone 492. central Utah west desert; and fire weather zone 495 Color Country west desert.

• Winds south 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 35 mph.

• Relative humidity: 10 to 15 percent.

• Impacts: The combination of low humidity and gusty winds may support the development of explosive fire growth potential Sunday.

• Precautionary/preparedness actions: A fire weather watch means that there is a potential for critical fire weather conditions.

• Continue to monitor St. George News for the latest forecasts and for possible red flag warnings.
