Girls soccer season starts with a bang for Region 9 teams

Roundup — The soccer season started well for southern Utah’s prep teams, with Dixie, Desert Hills and Snow Canyon each recording wins Thursday. Only Pine View took a loss on the season’s opening day.

Snow Canyon, coming off an 11-4-2 season and a second place region finish last year, started the season off right with a 5-1 drubbing of 5A Copper Hills. Cami Bergen and Meghan Mckenna each scored twice and Callie Stewart added a goal and an assist for the Lady Warriors.

Dixie shut out Springville 3-0 behind the net keeping prowess of Kelsie McCann and Whitney Stephens, who each played keeper for half a game. Alexa Smaellie, Finess White and Alexa Estridge all scored for the Lady Flyers.

Desert Hills was involved in a tight one up in the southwest part of the Salt Lake Valley as the Lady Thunder held off Herriman 1-0. Lauren Bushnell got the shutout as the Desert Hills goalkeeper and Brittany Terry scored the game’s only goal.

Pine View was soundly defeated by Maple Mountain 8-1. Janzen Morgan had the only goal for the Lady Panthers.

Defending region champion and state finalist Cedar played earlier in the week, dropping a 1-0 decision to Timpview on Tuesday, then rebounding from that loss with a 2-0 shutout of the Payson Lions Wednesday. Tara Shipp recorded the shutout in Wednesdays match with Cierra Robinson and Kathy Crisp each scoring goals.
