Narrator of July 4 fireworks broadcast hopes listeners will reflect on freedom

ST. GEORGE – On the Fourth of July, the City of St. George will add a special radio broadcast to be played in conjunction with its fireworks celebration.  The broadcast will feature patriotic-themed music and narration. For Carl Lamar, the narrator of the upcoming event, he said giving voice to the program was a privilege and an honor.

Regular listeners of “Carl and Marty in the Morning” will recognize Lamar as one-half of the weekday morning show on KONY County 99.9 FM. While Lamar and his co-host, Marty Lane, play country music and entertain listeners, the fireworks broadcast will present a more serious and reflective tone over the airwaves.

“I hope this program will cause a few people to reflect and boost their pride in America,” Lamar said.

He said he was excited to record the narration for the event, and added, “I wanted to do it well. I want people to focus on the words being said.”

Lamar had the opportunity to live outside of the country for a time and said it gave him a chance to recognize the freedoms Americans enjoy and take advantage of.

“Not everyone has the freedom and blessings we do,” he said. “I feel this is the greatest country on the Earth.”

Another influence on Lamar’s sense of patriotism was his father, a World War II veteran. He said his father passed on an attitude and a pride in service.

“They (the military) are the true heroes,” Lamar said.  The members of the armed forces were the ones that were willing to sacrifice their lives in order to protect the freedoms Americans take for granted every day. “Life–how can you give more than that?”

Americans get to celebrate Independence Day without restriction, Lamar added. The freedom to gather and travel unhindered between states without having to present ID is unheard of in some countries, he said.

Aside from offering an opportunity for reflection, Lamar said he hoped listeners would remember to “respect and honor the symbols of freedom,” such as the U.S. Flag and the members of the military.

The radio program will be at 10 p.m. on July 4, broadcast over 99.9 KONY FM, while fireworks decorate the skies on four different corners of St. George. The program will run for 21 minutes.

“They (the military) are the true heroes,” Lamar said.

I do not think the military is very heroic. It seems like a bloated welfare program. Many recruits are just poor and dumb, and see the military as some sort of salvation and a way to get their education paid for. Then, when they are deployed to a warzone and get blown up or lose limbs, they and their parents moan and whine incessantly.

This article was stupid, just a bunch of mindless nationalistic platitudes.

Wow congratulations !! That’s a great example of the exact “freedom of speech” that our Great American Heros have defended for the last 220 years. Thank you for sharing that.

      Oh and your welcome.
