DSC golfer Chappell earns postseason honors

The Golf Coaches Association of America has announced Division II PING All-Region honorees and Dixie State College senior Kyle Chappell earned all-West region honors for 2011-12.

“This award means a lot,” Chappell said. “It tops off a good year and proves that all the work and practice put in paid off.”

Chappell received the honor for the second consecutive year. Setting new benchmarks for the Red Storm golf program was commonplace for the Richfield native during his Dixie State career.

He recently became the first DSC golfer to qualify as an individual for the NCAA Division II Championships. At the Cardinal Club in Louisville, Chappell shot a three-round score of even par to finish in a tie for 19th place out of 108 total competitors.

In 32 competitive rounds this year, Chappell averaged a 72.75 stroke average, good for 24th in the country on the official GOLFSTAT Division II report. He matched his low round of the year with a 67 in the second round in Louisville to move into contention for All-American status.

“He’s been awesome for our program,” said DSC head coach Reed McArthur. “He had a great spring. It is well-deserved for a hard-working kid that loves the game.”
