Region 9 tennis players fall short at boys’ State

SOUTHERN UTAH – Of the Region 9 high schools who advanced to State, which was held May 18-19 at the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, only two captured a title.

Dixie 2nd singles player Tevan Balian, who did not lose a match throughout the entire season, continued his winning streak all the way to the finals, where he defeated a Park City student 6-4, 6-1.

The Desert Hills 1st doubles team of Mason Ford and Christian Davis faced Dixie’s Luke Heaton and Micah Alba in a neck-and-neck final, taking the win in the third set. 2nd doubles was also victorious over fellow Region 9 opponents Hurricane.

Though a far cry from their 2011 shutout, Desert Hills tied Dixie for second place overall, with Park City taking this year’s 3A State title. The remaining Region 9 schools placed accordingly: Hurricane – 5, Snow Canyon – 9, Canyon View – 15, Cedar – 17, Pine View – 17.

“(The tournament was) bittersweet,” said Dixie coach Eric Christensen. “The boys worked hard and I felt like we were the best team there, but couldn’t quite get it done as a whole.”
