ST. GEORGE — The Southern Utah Down Syndrome Association is holding an open house press conference on Tuesday, April 17, at 7 p.m., to introduce their planned support center located at 61 N 700 East, in the Sunburst Shopping Center between St. George Blvd. and Tabernacle.
Board Members, led by James McFadden, will discuss the programs they hope to establish along with several projects and improvements needing completion to get the center ready for use. Invited to attend will be member families, sponsors and the press.
During the Open House, members will be asked to make suggestions and participate in the operations of the facility. Board members hope to open the facility to the public by the end of May. The support center is being made possible in part through the generosity of Sue Cox and family and the participation of Grace to Families.
The Southern Utah Down Syndrome Association
SUDSA is a registered nonprofit organization. Also known as “Down South,” the association was reorganized in July of 2009 by McFadden and nine other local parents who also have children born with Down syndrome.
Since organizing, the association has struggled to maintain consistent programs, activities, and services for the many families who have supported it over the past two years. It is the hope of the current Board of Directors and McFadden that by establishing a support center they will be able to pursue grants and implement many of the programs families have indicated would help their children.
It is also the hope of the Board that a physical location will bring cohesiveness to the mission of its members. The association is currently an all volunteer organization with no paid staff and an affiliate organization to the National Down Syndrome Society.
