Calling all cyclists, it’s time to give your bike a check-up

ST. GEORGE – Is it here?  Could it really be spring?  While weather can certainly be unpredictable, the calendar says it’s Spring time, which means time for nice-weather outdoor activities.  For many, that outdoor activity includes two wheels and a couple of pedals…It’s biking season!

Time for a two-wheel check up!  Take some time this month to do an inspection of every family member’s bicycle.  Each bike should be properly sized for the rider and the rider should demonstrate their ability to control the bicycle effectively.  Check the brakes and make sure that when applied they do the job.  For nighttime users check the lights to make sure they are functioning and batteries have a full charge.  Loose parts and low tire pressures can make for a dangerous ride so be sure to tighten nuts, bolts, handlebars and seats, then be sure the tires are inflated.

It’s not all about checking out the two-wheeled transporter, but it’s also about checking out the rider!  Do they have a helmet and wear it appropriately (a helmet hanging from the handlebars may protect the metal but not your head!)  Does the rider know the rules of the road, hand turn signals and right-of-way?  Taking a few moments right now will help to make for many safe two-wheeled journeys!

The City of St. George has many miles of trails that riders can use.  The following link will help you explore the trails system and includes maps and access points as well as general rules and guidelines:
