First semi-pro game of the year; Rebels play host to Bulldogs

St George – The Dixie Rebels will open up their season on Saturday at 7 p.m. at Walt Brooks Stadium, Home of the Dixie Flyers, 350 East 700 South. The Dixie Rebels are the reigning Rocky Mountain Football League Champions and will play host to the Magic Valley Bulldogs. Tickets are $5 at the gate and kids 12 and under are free.

Coming off an undefeated season, a No. 7 national ranking and an invite to play in the Sunset Bowl in Las Vegas against the River City Gators of Sacramento, the Rebels are ready to start their quest for a third straight RMFL championship.

The Rebels are returning most of their star talent from last year and have also beefed up their offensive line. Last year the Rebels had the second ranked offense in the league and the top defense in the league and according to co-owner Doug Cook, “I think we’ll be even a little better this year.”

Expect to see a little rust from the Rebels. Normally they play one or two preseason games, but this year both of the teams they were planning on playing backed out.

The Bulldogs were one of the worst teams in the league last year. They had a decent defense, but were turnover prone. Grumblings around the league are that the Bulldogs have made some minor improvements over the off-season, but not enough to really compete with the top teams in the league.

The Rebels will be extending the fun after the game at Iceberg, the official home of the Dixie Rebels.
