ST. GEORGE – With the Thunder Over Utah Air Show just around the corner on March 17 and 18, questions concerning directions, ticket costs, parking and the air show’s schedule have been appearing on St. George News’s Facebook page. To address these inquiries, this ready-reference page has been provided. The bulk of the following information can also be found on the Thunder Over Utah website.
Location
The air show will be held at the St. George Municipal Airport. Directions for those coming from the St. George are as follows:
- Head south on I-15.
- Exit to Utah State Route 7 – Airport Parkway – at milepost 2
- Head east 7.5 miles on Southern Parkway.
- Parkway ends, exit to Airport Parkway.
- West on Airport Parkway – bear right at roundabout.
- Parking available at terminal building.
Tickets
General admission tickets for the day of the event are $25 each. It should be noted that there will be an additional $10 charge for vehicle parking.
Children ages 15 and under are free.
There are additional ticket packages available at the tickets section of the Thunder Over Utah website.
Parking and traffic
Parking will be available at the airport, as well as overflow locations which Marc Mortensen, Assistant to the City Manager and St. George, said was within a few thousand feet of the viewing area for the air show.
“Most of [the parking] is really quite close,” Mortensen said. Buses will also be onsite to transport people from the parking lot to the viewing area.
As many as 30,000 people are expected to attend the air show on Saturday alone, which could bring between 5,000 and 10,000 vehicles, Mortensen added. Preliminary estimates for the Sunday portion of the event are unknown, as concerns over heavy rains and high winds forecast for late Saturday and early Sunday may lead to a Sunday cancellation.
Still, whatever the weather has in store for Sunday, Mortensen said Saturday show-goers will need to have patience when it comes to the expected traffic congestion leading to and from the event.
“Expect some delays and heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic,” he said.
Once the show ends at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, it is estimated it will take up to 90 minutes to completely clear the area.
“Heavy traffic goes hand-in-hand with popular events,” Mortensen said. “People need to be patient.”

Entry Restrictions
Spectator area – Smoking is allowed outside the spectator gates and parking lots.
- All carry-in items and persons are subject to search.
- All unattended bags and items will be removed from the premises.
- Cameras may be used to monitor the facility.
- No RV parking allowed.

They want you to pay for the food there. It’s not all for ‘safety’ reasons. I see they don’t list water in plastic bottles. Full, it could be a heck of a weapon……. And the ice, do they not serve drinks in ice? So that should tell you it is mostly for greed.

Love an airshow, but in this economy allocating so many tax dollar seems exstravagant.

I don’t know how tax dollars are spent for this event, but I know every hotel in town will be full. Not sure how that’s not a boon to the local economy.
Pretty much all airshows sell the expensive concessions, etc. and prohibit pretty much everything in that list.
I’m pretty excited to see what we are starting so relatively close to home in airshows (I do not live in St George.)
Will they consider my insulin delivery system ( needels) a “weapon” and confiscate them, or worse, prohibit me from attending? Will the food consessions offer fare that is acceptable to diet restricted people? Oh well, I guess I may be able to see it from the Arizona side of the Parkway and then be able to have the items necessary for me to have a somewhat normal day.
Weird…Friday afternoon, work was expecting much higher volumes of customer traffic…so far eerily dead. The drive home this afternoon, expecting unusual gridlock-especially on Bluff…eerily light traffic. Hmmm, there’s most def not 40,000 additional people in the area yet!

Everybody’s so negative, wow! Finally get something new and exciting to not just the city, but the state as well, and look at most of these comments. You all need to get out more, you miserable, boring Mormons!
Haha, I’m so with “OMG”, people need to quit b****ing, this events looks to be over the top, and as of Thursday, pretty much all the hotel rooms in the area were booked, I’m not sure how many rooms we have (I’ll have to Google) but I do know there’s a fair amount of new, larger hotels. But yeah, the traffic everywhere is very surprisingly light, or maybe I’m in the wrong parts of town.
I totally disagree with OMG. The Mormons aren’t miserable and boring, they are out doing stuff. They are not sitting at a computer complaining about activities going on around our community. They are out doing something. Shheeeeshhh !
I would think that people coming from out of town might have jobs and would probably not be hitting the Boulevard/Bluff at end of business day but rather later? Unless they’re coming from the Vegas direction, they’ll probably need to stay Saturday night too! 🙂
Either way, the only negative thing about this airshow is the timing with the weather. Wonder if there will be wing-walking when there’s 50 mph gusts! 🙂

with whats going on in the world now days, the restrictions are not too much.. I drink beer but I wouldnt want drunks and guns in an area of so many people.. the coolers and other item they are restricting is nothing more that foresight on the possible things that could happen..

Well, my wife and I paid online for parking and tickets and printed them out, but lo and behold when we got there, between 9-10 am, not a single soul was checking or collecting fees/tickets. Additionally, no one was checking anything being brought in. Turns out we could have seen it for free and not paid insane prices for food and drinks by bringing our own.

I’m thoroughly disappointed by the air show itself – been to bigger, seen better – but all this hubbub over prices and restrictions was all for nought. Too bad the honest folks got stuck with the bill. If we go next year – and that’s a BIG “if” – we won’t pay a dime. If they happen to have people collecting fees/tickets then we’re just going to play it smart and sit outside the airport on public land and enjoy the few planes that are up there. Kudos to all the smart folks who took advantage of that.

Also, as a veteran, I want to thank the National Guard for attempting to help out with security/traffic control, but their role appeared to be organized very last minute and poorly executed because of constantly changing assignments. All the grunts on the ground get my full appreciation for spending a Saturday in cammies while the rest of us had fun, but whichever SNCO’s or Officers are responsible for the debacle need to retake some fundamental leaderhsip and logistics courses.

@OMG…..not a mormon here, we do stuff all the time, not behind the computer all day long.
People from Vegas will not come here because they just had a FREE show at Nellis last week or so.
I was “b—–” about the price because it is astronomical. We got a better show from Warner Valley today. Not as much wind as the Airport, and NO DIRT!!! If they brought in a Harrier, I might think twice about paying, but there just weren’t enough ‘acts’ to warrant that huge price.
