Flyers beat rival Panthers again

ST. GEORGE – The Dixie Flyers improve to 6-4 with a 45-34 win over the Pine View Panthers at Pine View High School. The Panthers drop to 1-8 in region play after losing to rival Dixie High for the second time this season.

The Flyers are now two games up on Snow Canyon for the fourth and final playoff spot.  The Flyers play Snow Canyon on Wednesday night at Snow Canyon High School.

The Flyers and Panthers got off to an ugly start, scoring a combined 12 first-quarter points. The Flyers led after the first quarter 7-5. The second quarter the Flyers got going, outscoring the Panthers 12-8 and extending their lead to six a the half.

The second half the Flyers kept up their great defense holding the Panthers to only two points in the third quarter and keeping the Panthers from scoring in double figures in the first three quarters.

In the final quarter, the Panthers finally got things going but it was too little too late.

Walker Swenson and Brandon Pledger led the Flyers in scoring with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Flyers’ leading scorer Devin Bennett was held to nine points.

Sophomore Jack Bangerter, who made three 3-point baskets finishing with 13 points, led the Panthers. Freshman Kody Wilstead added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Panthers.

The Panthers travel to Cedar High School to take on the Canyon View Falcons on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Panthers’ only region win came against the Falcons on Jan. 13.

The Flyers game against Snow Canyon is set to tip at 7 p.m. If the Flyers win they will clinch the fourth and final playoff spot.
