ST. GEORGE – The Deseret Hills Thunder beat the undermanned Dixie Flyers 52-49 at Dixie High School. The Snow Canyon Warriors beat the Pine View Panthers 64-44 at Snow Canyon High School. And the Cedar Redman beat the Canyon View Falcons 66-49 at Cedar High School. The Hurricane Tigers won a non-region game against Delta 66-47.
The Desert Hills Thunder traveled to Dixie High School to take on the Dixie Flyers. The Flyers were missing two Starters, their leading scorer Walker Swenson and point guard Kyle Hansen. Swenson is out indefinitely and Hansen is out for the season. The Flyers used a 20-5 run to take a 12-point lead midway through the second quarter. The Thunder ended the first half on a 10-4 run to cut the Flyer lead to four points at the half. In the second half the Thunder started using their height advantage getting the ball to Josh Anderson inside. Anderson scored eight of his ten points in the third quarter and the Thunder were able to regain the lead 40-38. The fourth quarter went back and forth as the Thunder went up by four after Tyler Ott dunked the ball, but Dixie answered back with a 5-0 run that took returned the lead to their team.
Many coaches talk about the importance of free throw shooting and when it mattered most the Thunder made their free throws count when the Flyers went 2-4. The Thunder held on to get the win 52-49 and improve to 5-0 on the season 1-0 in Region play. Brandon Simister led the way for the Thunder scoring 15 points. Ott added 14 points for the Thunder. Devin Bennett led all scoring with 18 points for the Flyers. Deshon Brown added 11 points in the loss. The Flyers plat again on Dec. 22, in the Dixie Great 8 tournament. The Thunder plays against Delta Friday.
The Snow Canyon Warriors caused 11 first quarter turnovers to jump out to an early eight-point lead over the Pine View Panthers. The great defense continued through the game forcing 24 turnovers, leading to a 64-44 Warrior victory. The Warriors used an 18-4 third quarter run to break the game open. Brayden Linde’s 18 points and Ben Smith 14 points and three steals led the Warriors. The Warriors had 11 different players score in the game. Dallin Milne who scored 10 first half points led the Panthers but was shut down in the second half only scoring two points. Freshman Kody Wilstead added seven points for the Panthers. The Warriors improve to 3-1 on the season 1-0 in Region play. With the loss the Panthers fall to 5-2 and 0-1 in Region play. The Warriors are back in action Thursday night against 4A Maple Mountain. The Panthers play Maple Mountain on Friday. Both games start at 7 p.m.
In Cedar City the Cedar Redman used a 25-9 forth quarter run to beat the visiting Canyon View Falcons 66-49 at Cedar High School. The Redman led by three after the first quarter but the Falcons answered back, tying the game at the half. The Redman had a one-point lead going into the forth-quarter when they caught fire. Kyler Nielson led the way with 21 points and five rebounds for the Redman and point guard John Urusa finished with a season high of 18 points. The Falcons were led by Chad Corry’s 18 points and Jordan Holman’s 11 points. The Redman improve to 4-0 on the season and 1-0 in Region play. The Redman are back in action Saturday in Richfield. The Falcons fall to 3-2 and 0-1 in Region play. The Falcons play again on Dec. 22, at Delta High School.
The Hurricane Tigers were also in action in Delta. The Tigers finished with four players in double figures led by Colton Marshall’s 23 points. Weston Yardley added 15 points, Taylor Parker added 11 points and Boston Gubler added 10 points. The Tigers are now on a three game winning streak and improve to 3-2 on the season. The Tigers host Richfield on Friday.
