WASHINGTON COUNTY – Today, many communities are awash in prescription drugs that most, frighteningly, come from medicine cabinets, perhaps even your own.  Take Back Events are designed to help people dispose of medications confidentially and safely. This Fall’s Rx Take Back Event is scheduled for next Saturday, Oct. 29, throughout Washington County.

Last spring, residents of Washington County banded together to collect their old, expired, and unwanted prescription drugs and dropped them off at one of several locations for disposal. Records were set because of the awareness and willing involvement of these citizens.

Prescription drug abuse is becoming an epidemic, largely due to the sheer volume of prescription drugs available. (Almost 75 percent of kids who abuse prescription drugs get them from their own homes or those of a friend.)

In addition, every year more than 71,000 children end up in  emergency rooms from unintentional medicine overdoses. We can curb these problems by getting rid of unused or expired medications.

Flushing unwanted medications down the toilet is not recommended and not safe.

Don’t allow expired or unwanted medications be the cause of you, your child or someone you know becoming a statistic. Take them back!

Note:  When you take these drugs to these locations to be disposed of, they will be disposed of safely, conveniently, confidentially, and it will help law enforcement efforts, your community and yourself.

This Saturday, Oct. 22, Dan Murphy, host of Last Call on Fox News FM 96.7 and 1450 AM will focus on the Fall Rx Take Back Event with guests Logan Reid, MSS and Detective Curtis Sprague of the St George PD and WC Drug Task Force.

Reid, Chair of the Washington County Prevention Coalition and Detective Sprague, the Coalition’s Vice Chair, are key players in the success of this program. WCPC offers strategies aimed at addressing substance abuse prevention issues that affect our communities today, particularly prescription drug and alcohol abuse. Community participation is highly welcomed during this program.
