ZION NATIONAL PARK – A 150-200 acre fire is burning in the Herbs Point area of the Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park. Kolob Canyons is in the northern section of the park, east of Interstate 15, approximately 15 miles south of Cedar City.
It is definitely not human caused and David Eaker, Fire Information Officer, conjectures it is more than likely lightning caused, possibly hold over from a strike a few days ago that smoldered until wind and other conditions were right to give it ignition.
Fire fighting resources include four helicopters, two wild land engines and a 20 person hand crew battling the fire. These efforts began yesterday afternoon. “It is 25 percent contained,” said Eaker.
“There are no trail closures, no road closures, no evacuations at this time, ” said Eaker. “There are some private structures outside of the park that could become threatened if conditions enlarge the fire in that direction.
