WASHINGTON COUNTY – Multiple fire agencies are working to contain a fire that has spread to almost 300 acres since 3:11 p.m. today.

Kelly Washburn, fire information officer, said two homes are threatened but have not been evacuated. She said the fire was human caused from cutting metal.

“You have to be smart with that stuff right now,” she said. “It’s scary how much it happens.”

The majority of the property caught in the Katy fire is privately owned, she said. The fire is located off of Kolob Terrace and is 10 percent contained.

“We’re trying to get an accurate count of land ownership,” she said. “A very small piece is BLM and park land.”

The Hurricane Valley Fire District, BLM, State Division of Forestry Fire, Zion National Park and Hildale Volunteer Fire Department have all responded to assist.

Washburn said further updates would be provided in the morning.
