ST. GEORGE – Attorney, N. Adam Caldwell, was appointed by Governor Gary Herbert on June 24, to serve on the 2011 Child Support Guidelines Advisory Committee, and was elected by the other committee members to chair the committee.
The committee is made up of representatives from the Office of Recovery Services, Judicial Council, Utah State Bar, custodial parents, non-custodial parents, economic experts, and other individuals of the community at large.
Utah law requires that the advisory committee convene every four years to review the child support guidelines, and related issues such as medical and child care expenses, to ensure their application results in the determination of appropriate child support award amounts.
The committee will ultimately present its recommendations to the Legislative Judiciary Interim Committee this October.
“It is a delicate balance whenever you propose changes to child support guidelines,” Caldwell said. “For example, if you make a recommendation that could be seen as favoring the custodial parents, that same recommendation will obviously have a negative impact on non-custodial parents, or vice versa. Ultimately, the committee wants child support laws that are fair to all interested parties, especially the minor children involved.”
Caldwell is a shareholder with Snow Jensen & Reece, P.C., with a legal practice primarily devoted to family law and civil litigation. In addition to serving on the committee, Caldwell also serves on the Executive Committee for the Utah State Bar’s Family Law Section, and serves on the Judicial Council’s Standing Committee for Children and Family Law.
