WASHINGTON COUNTY – A 41-year-old Brookside man was arrested today for allegedly starting a fire in Veyo on June 23.

Detective Nate Abbott said the property was owned by the Veyo Culinary Water Association and there was between $1,500 and $5,000 worth of property damage. Firefighters were able to put out the fire before it burned nearby homes.

The suspect was a firefighter who resigned a week before allegedly starting the fire, Abbott said.

Abbott said the Fire Marshall and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office began investigating the fire as arson after finding evidence at the scene. He would not say what evidence was found, why they believe the man started the fire or how the fire was started because the investigation is ongoing.

The man was charged with a 3rd degree felony and posted a $5,000 bond to be released from Purgatory.
