SOUTHERN UTAH – July 3 has seen seven fires in the Bureau of Land Managements Color Country Region. Nick Howell with BLM Color Country Interagency Fire Response team summarizes the incidents.
Kanab – a small fire which appears to have been lightning caused, is contained or out.
Hurricane – the Old 91 Fire – cause related to power lines – now contained. See St. George News separate story on that fire which burned 20 acres in the region of the Walmart Distribution and Winkel Distribution Centers.
Dixie National Forest, east of Cedar City – a small fire of human cause, addressed by the Forest Service, now out.
Near Zion National Park – one tenth of an ace burned, human caused, now out.
Arizona strip – two fires, both human caused, now out.
And the most recent this evening in the area of Utah Hill in Ivins – a fire now named the Boomer Fire; this fire was called in as a 50-acre fire but when crews and investigators responding arrived at the scene between 8:30 and 9 p.m. it “magically became a 1-acre fire,” says Howell. This fire was first thought to be lightning caused but is now believed to have a power line related cause.
Howell says that the Boomer Fire is in the power line corridor that goes through Sunset Drive in Ivins, not near any of the local communities. This fire is nearly contained, it is fully accessible to crews on site and is not expected to be a developing threat.
