ST. GEORGE –  On Tuesday evening, June 7, Assistance League of Southern Utah welcomes ‘Round Nevada Classic Car Tour to St. George for a benefit “Show and Shine” (no awards given the cars) at Tonaquint Intermediate School.

This event is free to the public and free to those interested in showing their own classics at the show, and runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

‘Round Nevada Classic Car Tour, as well as other local participants, Kruzin’ Knights of Ivins, Mustang Owners Club and Color Country Model A Club, promise this show over 100 classic beauties for the pleasure of Southern Utahns.  About 75 of these cars are coming from out of state and haven’t been seen before at our local car shows.

Local car buffs interested in joining in the show are asked to arrive with their own cars at 4 p.m. for placement.

The website for ‘Round Nevada Classic Car Tour 2011 explains its objective:

“[The Tour] works in conjunction with the local Chambers of Commerce and business leaders of towns they stop at and they always ask, ‘What can we do for you and your charities?'”

The idea of the tour is to bring people in from all over the U.S. and Canada to see the towns in the rural areas, “the towns without the glitz and glitter,” according to Big Al and Gary. While 50 to 80 classic cars stop by and visit ghost towns, have lunch on Main Street, or have a bar-b-que, the local charities enjoy the crowds that come buy to reminisce and remember “the good old days.”

While St. George can hardly be considered a “ghost town,” Martha Heuer, Chairperson for Resource Development for the Assistance League of Southern Utah, assures that the the ‘Round Nevada group wanted to come to St. George and is enthusiastic about the invitation.

Fundraising for the Assistance League will be made through the sale of opportunity tickets at the event, proceeds of which will all go to benefit Washington County school children.

Heuer is excited about the prizes as well as the event:

“We have about 60 items for opportunity drawings  We have a lot of car stuff – oil changes, car washes; we have other things like a  George Foreman grill, restaurant gift certificates, all kinds of stuff, travel pillows made by quilting ladies, and more.   People may buy these tickets when they come to the car show – and we will be doing drawings all evening.

Assistance League was established locally as a guild in 2008, one of 120 chapters and guilds now throughout the nation, under the National Assistance League established in the early 1890’s.  The NAL was the first nonsectarian organization in the West to recognize the potential of volunteers in helping those less fortunate to a better, more meaningful life.

Of Assistance League Southern Utah, Heurer says it raises money to provide new clothing for elementary aged school children, and services all of the schools in Washington County.  The school counselors identify the children in need, she explains.

Heuer also gladly encourages new memberships in the Assistance League.

“We will have three people, and brochures at the car show with information on the Assistance League.  All three are on the board or past board members and we would love new members.  We meet from September through May on the second Thursday of every month.   Our members include men and women – as a side note, we do have a couple of men, when we go to these schools, we’re dealing with the likes of 5th grade boys, and we have some men in our League; and it is really nice. “

Heurer laughs, “We always need handy men.”

Classic cars, Assistance and Charity for Children, The Dogfather offering Hot Dogs you can’t refuse, Williams Snow Cones and Kettle Corn to occupy your snack and sweet tooth as you enjoy the cars, all come together to make for an enjoyable Tuesday evening out for all.
