Red Storm Survive Scare on North Shore

LAIE, HI-The 12th ranked Dixie State College women’s basketball team survived a scare on the road tonight by winning narrowly 75-70 over BYU-Hawaii on the North Shore of Oahu.

The Red Storm (22-2, 12-1 PWC) took an early 26-16 lead only to see the Seasiders (5-18, 3-10 PWC) go on a 16-1 run and take a 38-37 lead into the half.

Coach Angie Kristensen said, “I have to give BYU-Hawaii credit, they came ready to play.”

The 2nd half featured four ties and four lead changes in the first 13 minutes, only to see the Red Storm overcome the 11 three pointers that the Seasiders made in the game.

Erica Carlson (Tucson, AZ/Canyon del Oro HS) connected on a jumper with 6:47 remaining to give Dixie State the lead for good at 60-58.

The Red Storm shot well below their average from the field at 37.5 percent and a were a dismal 45.5 percent from the free throw line.

“It’s really hard to get focused over here,” added Coach Kristensen. “I thought we played like we were on a vacation at times tonight.”

Carlson earned her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. “She played really well tonight,” said Coach Kristensen.

Sheila Adams (Layton, UT/Layton) hit four three pointers and led the Red Storm in scoring with 20 points. Johnna Brown (Las Vegas, NV/Centennial High School) scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Breann Hill (Harrisburg, PA/McDevitt) on a poor shooting night (4-14) scored 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds with 10 of those on the offensive side.

For BYU-Hawaii, Richelle Rieben nailed seven three pointers and scored a game-high 23 points. Kristen Hartley had 17 points and eight rebounds. The Seasiders shot 41.7 percent from the field.
