ST. GEORGE – The Dixie State College Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of DSC Music Department Chair Glenn Webb, presents its annual mid-winter concert on Tuesday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m., at the DSC Dolores Dore’ Eccles Fine Arts Center Mainstage Theater.
The jazz musicians continue their season-long custom of playing arrangements from the cannon of jazz greats like Duke Ellington (I’m Just a Lucky So and So)and Les Hooper (First Time Ever). In addition the band will play music by some of the leading composers of the 1970’s jazz scene such as Toshiko Akiyoshi and Stan Kenton, while Buddy Rich’s tune Space Shuttle will push the band to the limits.
The band will feature recent DSC D-Day Queen Stephanie Higginson singing with the band on Lerner & Lowe’s Almost Like Being In Love, which Natalie Cole won a Grammy award with this arrangement a few years ago.
Joining Dixie’s jazz musicians will be pianists majoring in music from the DSC music Department. A quartet of piano students, including Justin Hansen, Greg Anderson, Ren Quinn, and Shaun Syphus, will perform a two piano, eight-hand arrangement of Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever. In addition, pianists Tia Melessa and Aaron Lund will perform Four Years to Light, an original composition written by Ms. Melessa.
General admission tickets will be available at the door for $5 for adults and $1 for DSC students and faculty and staff with current ID. Patrons may also purchase tickets online at “tickets.dixie.edu.” For tickets and further information, please call 435-652-7800 or visit the central campus ticket office at the DSC Avenna Center.
