ST. GEORGE – The winless Mesa State Mavericks took out their early season frustrations on Dixie State Friday by sweeping a doubleheader 9-3 and 4-0.

Dixie State dropped to 3-4 while MSC improved to 2-4.

GAME ONE – Two errors in the top of the sixth inning proved costly for Dixie State College.

Mesa State College took advantage of the miscues to score six unearned runs en route to a 9-5 win in the series opener.

The Mavs loaded the bags with a hit batter, a single and the first of two DSC inning errors. A bases-loaded walk and a second error opened the floodgates for the Mavs. Three straight RBI singles tallied the final runs in the frame.

Jeff Popick went 4-for-5 with a double and Eric Nordine added three singles to lead the Mesa State 15-hit attack.

Jordan Hanley had three singles for Dixie State. James Mahler took the loss giving up nine runs, three earned, over 5.2 innings.

Dylan Evans threw 5.1 frames for his first win of the season. Jared Christensen earned a save holding the Storm to one hit over the final 3.2 innings.

GAME TWO – DSC fell victim to an effectively wild starting performance from Nolan Snell who allowed just two hits over five innings despite walking five batters.

The Mavs knocked around another 11 hits including three from leadoff man Ken Evanson.

The Red Storm’s only offensive output in the nightcap came on a Colton Yack double in the first inning and a Nick Urban single in the fourth.

Mike Dedrick surrendered two runs on seven hits over five innings in the loss.

Dixie State and Mesa State close the four-game series with a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.
