DSC Women’s Basketball Team Returns Home for Upcoming Game

THIS WEEK-The #13-ranked Dixie State College of Utah women’s basketball returns home this week for two of five consecutive home game. They welcome on Thursday the Penguins of Dominican University and Saturday the Urban Knights of Academy of Art University. Both games are scheduled for a 5:30 PM MT tip-off inside the Burns Arena.

RED STORM WATCH – Losing for the first time in eight games, the Red Storm look to take out their frustration on Dominican University and Academy of Art this weekend. Committing a school record 36 turnovers in the 71-79 loss to #12 Grand Canyon, the Red Storm will need to minimize their turnovers and be able to force their opponents into committing them. Sophomore sensation Johnna Brown continues to average a double-double with 16.6 ppg and 10.4 rpg. Senior Breann Hill averages 15.2 ppg and 5.4 rpg. She had a career high 11 assists in the loss to GCU. Dixie State shoots .459 from the field and averages and 78.9 ppg, good enough for 12th in the country. The one chink in the Red Storm armor is the 20.5 turnovers they commit per game. DSC is out rebounding their opponents by 9.5 per game and hold them to just 60.9 ppg. The inside presence of Senior center Erica Carlson, who is currently tied for 1st in the country in that category.

-Despite the loss Johnna Brown picked up her 7th double-double of the season and the eight of her career.

-Career Scoring Ranks: #2 Johnna Brown (589, 199 points behind #1 Jessica Carver) #4 Shanae Vaifanua (551, 34 points behind #3 Deney Phommabout) Leader is Jessica Carver with 788 career points.

-Shanae Vaifanua with one steal this weekend will tie career leader Tanya Clark at 107 steals in her career. She will become the all-time steals leader with two.

THURSDAY OPPONENT: DOMINICAN (CA) – With Dominican dropping the 76-49 loss to the Red Storm the last time out. The will look and try and pick up their first series win against the Red Storm in Saint George. Dixie State won the last meeting in the Burns Arena 82-65 on 2/25/10 and hold the overall series advantage 3-1. Kelsey Janusch leads the team in scoring at 11.6 ppg and Tammy Brawner adds 8.6 ppg. The Penguins average only 54.8 ppg and allow 70.2. They shoot just .349 from the field and .301 from behind the arc. Dominican is has lost their last two games and are 3-7 in their last 10. Dominican did hand first place Hawaii Pacific their only loss, a 70-65 win on 1/29/11 in Belmont.

SATURDAY OPPONENT: ACADEMY OF ART- Coming off consecutive victories over Notre Dame de Namur and Dominican, the Urban Knights have won three of their last four games. Their only loss in the streak is a 65-67 OT to Hawaii Pacific. Nicole DeRosier averages 12.2 ppg, Jessica Nolan 11.9 ppg and Verity Peets at 10.3 ppg. They are a team that can cause many problems for the Red Storm and will surprise someone if they aren’t prepared to play. The Urban Knights average 65.6 ppg and allow 68.6 ppg. They shoot .413 percent from the floor and .330 from behind the arc.

REGIONAL POLLS – Three Pacific West teams make an appearance in this weeks regional rankings. Dixie State dropped two spots and now is #5, Grand Canyon, despite beating DSC stayed at number six and fellow PacWest member Hawaii Pacific held course at #10.
