ST. GEORGE — Memory Matters Utah/Nevada in conjunction with The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration (AFTD) will offer a frontal-temporal dementia caregiver support group.
The group will be held on Monday, June 10, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. at the St. George Library located at 88 W. 100 South, St. George.
Bonnie Shephard, who sits on the national board for AFTD, will be facilitating the caregiver support group. Shepherd cared for her husband who suffered from FTD until he passed away in 2011.
The support group is free and open to anyone caring for someone with this type of dementia.
FTD, commonly referred to as frontotemporal dementia, fronto-temporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), or Picks disease is distinct from other forms of dementia in two important ways:
- FTD is a gradual, progressive decline in behavior and language (with memory usually relatively preserved)
- Onset of FTD often occurs in a person’s 50s and 60s but has been seen as early as 21 and as late as 80 years of age.
While there are currently no treatments to slow or stop the progression of the disease, FTD research is expanding, producing greater understanding of the disorders.
