ST. GEORGE — Traffic was backed up for 2 miles on Interstate 15 Wednesday after two trailers being pulled by a single truck overturned in northern Washington County.

The incident involved a black Chevrolet pickup with four occupants on their way to Sand Hollow for the 4th of July weekend. Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Larry Mower said the pickup was pulling both a camper and a trailer with two all-terrain vehicles on it. The truck was traveling south on I-15 near mile marker 40 when the incident occurred around 1 p.m.

The driver of the truck told police that when a semitractor-trailer pulling three trailers passed him, it created a wind that caused the trailer with the ATVs to start to whip.

“The last trailer began to whip, which caused the camp trailer to start whipping as well,” Mower said. “Then it caused them to go out of control and the trailers overturned, and then the ATVs dumped out.”

The trailers came to rest blocking both lanes of travel, but police were able to direct traffic past the wreck on the outside shoulder. Traffic was backed up on the interstate for about 2 miles for the next hour.

“Towing arrived rather quickly, so we were able to start getting things cleared up fast,” Mower said.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident, and no injuries were reported.

The driver of the pickup was issued a citation for having a weaving trailer.
