ST. GEORGE — A driver was seriously injured Friday when his car crashed into a block wall in Hurricane with an impact that awakened a number of nearby residents.

Shortly after 1 a.m. officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash involving a 1998 gray Toyota Camry that struck the wall on Dixie Springs Drive.

“Some neighbors heard the crash and called 911 to report it,” Hurricane Police officer Ken Thompson said.

The driver was still inside the car when responders arrived. They extricated him and transported him to Dixie Regional Medical Center.

Thompson said the driver was seriously injured and was not wearing a seat belt.

One witness at the scene said the driver was breathing but “had no other response.”

The car appeared to have struck the wall “for an unknown reason,” Thomspon said, and the impact threw it back toward the street where it was found by police.

The witness said there were no visible skid marks either in front of or near the block wall.

The heavily damaged vehicle was towed from the roadway.

The incident remains under investigation but “alcohol is suspected in the crash,” Thompson said, adding that no citations have been issued at this point.

This report is based on statements from police or other responders and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
