ST. GEORGE — To commemorate the upcoming Patriot Day, Washington County’s “Give Your Land a Hand” program is staging three cleanups in locations spanning the county on Saturday. County officials are requesting the community’s patriotic support in tending to the public lands that belong to all Americans.
Washington County offers a wide range of outdoor recreation opportunities on public lands, including OHV use, hiking, hunting, fishing and camping. The need to protect these lands for the enjoyment of future generations is the driving force behind the Give Your Land a Hand initiative.
“Our natural beauty helps set us apart from other destinations in the region, and it is our duty to act as good stewards to keep it that way,” County Commissioner Victor Iverson said in a press release.
On Saturday, the county is inviting volunteers to help pick up trash in one of three locations: Cottonwood Springs Road, the Mill Creek area or the LaVerkin Overlook. All clean-ups begin at 9 a.m.
While only 10-15 volunteers are needed at Cottonwood Springs Road to pick up small trash items, a much larger number are needed at Mill Creek and LaVerkin Overlook, where there are multiple, widespread dumpsites accessed via dirt roads.
Both individuals and organizations are invited to attend and help remove big items like furniture and appliances. Volunteers with high-clearance, four-wheel drive vehicles will be much appreciated in helping remove large items. Volunteers are encouraged to bring work gloves, water and snacks.
For the Cottonwood Springs Road cleanup, look for parking at the very bottom of the road on the right (north) side. For the Mill Creek area cleanup, park at the north end of Main Street in Washington City where the asphalt turns to dirt. For the LaVerkin Overlook cleanup, park at the beginning of the LaVerkin Overlook Road located approximately 2.5 miles east (toward Zion) of the intersection of State Street and state Highway 9 in LaVerkin.
Partner support for this event includes Washington County, Republic Services, Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, and the State of Utah Trust Lands Administration.
