Art Conversation features fiber, installation artist

ST. GEORGE – Fiber and installation artist Sara Rockinger will meet the public and share her work at the St. George Art Museum Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. As part of the SGAM’s continuing Art Conversation program, Rockinger will provide background and explanation about her display, which opens on Dec. 12 as part of the “Here Comes the Gown: 150 Years of Wedding Dresses” show.

Installation art is an artistic genre of three-dimensional works which are often site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space. In other words, you’ll have to see it to appreciate it.

“As a fabric artist I layer image, thread and fabric to create figurative work. Whether two- or three-dimensional, representational or conceptual, I use my sewing machine as a drawing tool to create contour and density representing the human experience to bridge differences for a stronger community,” notes the artist.

Rockinger has a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations from the College of Wooster, OH; a Certificate of Women’s Studies and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Fiber Art from Colorado State University.

Although Rockinger’s artwork will be on display until May 9, this will be the only opportunity for patrons and art lovers to meet her and discuss her concepts.

Art Conversations are adult gatherings of art lovers interested in more information about the artist and her medium. The Art Conversation program is free of charge.

The St. George Art Museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 47 E. 200 North. According to the museum’s mission statement, the city-owned and operated facility exists “to educate … through quality exhibitions from all periods, cultures and media … and to collect, conserve, inventory, exhibit and interpret art and artifacts from Utah and the West.”
