LAVERKIN — Firefighters managed to extinguish a vehicle fire before it spread to the house it was parked in front of Friday afternoon.

Firemen from Hurricane Valley Fire District responded to the blaze just before 3 p.m. near the 200 South block of 100 West off State Street in LaVerkin.

Firefighters arrived within minutes of the initial dispatch page, finding a GMC van fully engulfed in flames encroaching on the front porch of a mobile home.

Thick smoke billowed from the van as crews prepared a ladder truck to douse the fire.

“They went into fast-attack mode and were able to extinguish the fire within a few minutes,” Hurricane Valley Fire Battalion Chief Kohl Furley said. “They were able to keep the fire contained to the vehicle where it’s believed that it initially started.”

At the time the fire ignited, a man was inside the mobile home with his pets. Furley said a neighbor alerted him to the blaze, and they were able to escape without injury.

“The vehicle was a total loss. Estimated value was around $2,500,” Furley said, noting that a camp trailer parked next to the van that was already going to be brought to the scrapyard also burned.

“Right now, we know that the fire started inside the passenger compartment of the vehicle,” Furley said, “but it’s still under investigation as to what caused the ignition source.”

Firefighters were assisted at the scene by officers from LaVerkin Police Department and Washington County Sheriff’s Office.
