ST. GEORGE — A crash on Center Street in Ivins Saturday night injured a woman and young child. One of the drivers involved in the crash was arrested for suspected felony DUI.

Officers and emergency personnel were dispatched to the head-on crash at 607 E. Center Street at 11:04 p.m. involving a passenger car and a pickup truck, Santa Clara-Ivins Police Sgt. Jaron Studley said.

Upon arrival, responders found both vehicles heavily damaged and several occupants with injuries, including a 57-year-old woman in the passenger car who suffered “extensive trauma to the chest area,” Studley said. The woman was transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in serious condition.

A 5-year-old child riding in the pickup truck was also injured and transported to the hospital, Studley said.

At the time of the crash, the driver of the passenger car was heading east on Center Street and merged into the center lane to turn left, while the driver of the pickup truck was heading west on the same street.

The driver of the truck then veered into the center lane where it struck the passenger car head-on, Studley said.

While speaking with the woman driving the pickup, later identified as Mercedes Gutierrez, of St. George, officers observed signs of intoxication, Studley said. After receiving medical evaluation at the hospital, Gutierrez was transported by police to Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane.

Gutierrez was booked on suspicion of DUI with serious bodily injury, a third-degree felony, as well as one infraction for improper lane travel.

This report is based on statements from police and may not contain the full scope of findings. Persons arrested or charged are presumed innocent until found guilty in a court of law or as otherwise decided by a trier-of-fact.
