ST. GEORGE — A new app-based delivery service is being launched in St. George for Lin’s Fresh Market and Target.

The service is called Shipt and launches Tuesday, offering users an assortment of groceries and household items that can be browsed online and ordered for same-day delivery.

Shipt operates nationally and is a subsidiary of Target. It launched in Utah in Ogden, Provo and Salt Lake City in May 2018. With the addition of the St. George stores, the company says the service is now available to approximately 750,000 households across the state.

“We’re committed to serving the busy residents in every corner of Utah, and this expansion brings our members all the essentials they need right to their door,” Shipt founder and CEO Bill Smith said in a news release. “Through our app, our members have access to everything they need, when they need it, right at their fingertips.”

Orders are fulfilled by Shipt employees who shop for and deliver online orders to users’ door in as little as one hour. The paid shoppers function as “gig economy” contractors similar to Uber or Lyft drivers.

The service costs $99 per year. Orders over $35 are delivered for free, and any orders under that amount include a $7 delivery fee.

The app includes some restrictions on what can be ordered from Target and Lin’s through the app. Large appliances and furniture can’t be delivered, but smaller household items such as mops and brooms can be ordered.

There is also currently no option in St. George to have alcoholic items such as beer delivered through the app. Shipt can’t deliver tobacco products or prescriptions.

A customer service representative at Lin’s Fresh Market told St. George News this is the first time a delivery service has been offered from the store. Lin’s contracts with Shipt for the delivery service but also still offers its own in-house curbside pickup program.

While products can be ordered via mail on the Target website, Shipt offers a faster alternative with same-day delivery.

The company is offering the service to St. George area customers for half the annual membership fee, at $49, if they sign up before Tuesday on the Shipt website. Anyone interested in becoming a paid shopper in the Southern Utah area can also sign up online.
