ST. GEORGE — A worker who broke his leg at the top of a construction site was lowered to safety and transported to the hospital with assistance from the St. George Fire Department Saturday morning.
The fire department received the call of a male construction worker with a broken leg with bones sticking out around 9:10 a.m. The man was working on the new building next to Taco Bell on 20 North 600 E.
St. George Fire Battalion Chief Robert Hooper said how the man broke his leg was unknown to responders, but he was on top of the roof and didn’t fall through any floors.
“Upon arrival, our crews were able to determine that he’d have to be carried down because with the process of construction, there were no stairs to the top two floors,” Hooper said.
Because the man had to be lowered down the side of the building, Hooper said, an additional response team had to be called in, resulting in 18 personnel on scene.
Medical personnel from Gold Cross Ambulance transported the man to the Dixie Regional Medical Center. Firefighters used ropes and a ladder truck to bring the man down from the roof, the fifth level of the building.
“We conducted a high-angle technical rescue off the top of the roof,” Hooper said.
It took first responders an hour to conduct the rescue and get the patient on the ground and on the way to the hospital, Hooper said.
“People always ask why it takes so long,” he said, “but in order to do something safe, especially from 50 to 60 feet in the air, we have to make sure it’s done right.”
The man’s condition was unknown to responders at the time of this report.
This report is based on preliminary information provided by emergency responders and may not contain the full scope of findings.

Ow, ow, ow, Ooooowwwwww, Mmm or orphie, na nee na na need Mmm orph fiend, aw naw nee dlle zzz! ! ! Ok, ok, do it, doooo iiiiitt now! I’ll be an addict before I get off this roof guys! Practice your skyscraper rescuing on your on time over at the bikini dorm like everyone else. This is the “Guy with compound leg fractures” dorm; yeah, the one you never hear about. Let’s take the stairs, and maybe I’ll get home in time for kickoff. Hey, I can still feel my arms & legs, somethings wrong here? Where’s the “Kit” guy?
need to get some osha enforcement out to these work sites to make sure the “foremen” aren’t ordering shortcuts, and also check if they know enough spanish that the workers can follow safety orders. Also, get ICE out there for a raid at the same time. They can even ride out in the same vehicle, but make that vehicle a bus, bc I have a feeling we gonna need a full roundup.
Lets not separate the illegals from their children but if we can just separate a few from their lawnmowers , leaf blowers, western unions, and cheap harbor freight tools it will be progress.
exactly
What makes you think he is illegal. You are a racist. You really mean mexican in general. Get a life !
Dude they do not hire Mexican people. They hire american drug addicts from Labor ready /people ready.
For all your Safety needs, like OSHA training, safety equipment, Personal Protective Equipment, safety manuals/programs for your business, and job site safety consulting, contact me. Right here in Southern Utah.
Let me help you be in compliance before something like this happens, and then OSHA shows up at your business to go through all your outdated safety programs (if you even have any), employee training files (which you probably don’t have) and then ends up writing you a hefty fine! It’s time to get with the program people!
Construction/General Industry OSHA 10 & 30 hour, FMCSA, and Oil & Gas Industries
All well and good, but the problem is likely that “foremen” and the crews of illegals have realized they can build faster not worrying about safety equipment or protocols. The foreman knows it’s against the law–they simply don’t care and must feel like it’s worth risking a fine to ‘git them buildin’s built up real quick’.
The first step is ICE enforcement. Crews of illegals should not be allowed to work in the first place.
ICE needs a satellite office on Sunset Blvd.
They hire saint george druggies not mexicans. You really have no clue.
Such a racist you are! You really mean mexican in general too !
Dang, this story went south fast ! Within 9 comments it went from a man with a compound fracture to an Illegal alien working on site with irresponsible management , OSHA and ICE enforcement. NONE of which was mentioned in the article.
Just consider their comments “creative writing” Mike. After all, it’s what most of the main stream media does but they call it “journalism”.
It must be President Obama’s fault. Trump would never get rid of all those pesky regulations to protect workers.
