NEW YORK (AP) — Embracing a historic change, the Boy Scouts of America announced plans Wednesday to admit girls into the Cub Scouts starting next year and to establish a new program for older girls using the same curriculum as the Boy Scouts. The Girl Scouts of the USA has said they are critical of the move.
Under the plan, Cub Scout dens — the smallest unit — will be single-gender, either all-boys or all-girls. The larger Cub Scout packs will have the option to remain single gender or welcome both genders. The program for older girls is expected to start in 2019 and will enable girls to earn the coveted rank of Eagle Scout.
The Boy Scouts board of directors, which approved the plan unanimously in a meeting at BSA headquarters in Texas, said the change was needed to provide more options for parents.
“We believe it is critical to evolve how our programs meet the needs of families interested in positive and lifelong experiences for their children,” said Michael Surbaugh, the BSA’s chief scout executive.
“The values of Scouting — trustworthy, loyal, helpful, kind, brave and reverent, for example — are important for both young men and women,” Surbaugh added.
The announcement follows many months of outreach by the organization, which distributed videos and held meetings with the Boy Scout community to discuss the possibility of expanding girls’ participation beyond existing programs, such as Venturing and Sea Scouts.
The Girl Scouts of the USA criticized the initiative, saying it strained the century-old bond between the two organizations. Girl Scout officials have suggested the BSA’s move was driven partly by financial problems and a need to boost revenue.
In August, the president of the Girl Scouts accused the Boy Scouts of seeking to covertly recruit girls into their programs while disparaging the Girl Scouts’ operations.
“I formally request that your organization stay focused on serving the 90 percent of American boys not currently participating in Boy Scouts … and not consider expanding to recruit girls,” wrote GSUSA President Kathy Hopinkah Hannan in a letter to the BSA’s president, AT&T Chairman Randall Stephenson.
The Girl Scouts, founded in 1912, and the BSA, founded in 1910, are among several major youth organizations in the U.S. experiencing sharp drops in membership in recent years. Reasons include competition from youth sports leagues, a perception by some families that they are old-fashioned and busy schedules that prompt some parents to despair of meeting all their children’s obligations. For some families, scouting programs that welcome both boys and girls could be a welcome convenience.
As of March, GSUSA reported 1,566,671 youth members and 749,008 adult members, down from just over 2 million youth members and about 800,000 adult members in 2014. The Boy Scouts say current youth participation is about 2.35 million, down from 2.6 million in 2013 and more than 4 million in peak years of the past.

This is the most ridiculous thing I have heard since Mormonism became a religion . So does this mean I can join the girl scouts. Does this mean the name of the organization has to change to name to “I identify as Scouts” or “Transgender Scouts” Have there been any boys who want to be girl scouts? Try actually reading the article (rather than just the headline) before commenting, you’ll embarrass yourself less. They’ll have all-girl groups and all-boy groups, not coed, trans, or “identify as” groups. So what they’re doing reinforces traditional gender, it doesn’t water it down or ignore it. This change actually makes sense, in stark contrast to so many of their other decisions over the last decade.
But the reality is: it really is just all about the $$$. Kids today are so preoccupied with iphones, video games, soc media, etc I can understand why enrollment would be way down. The organization itself is rather a cultural dinosaur. If they want to admit girls, boys, gays, transexuals, goats(lol) I don’t think it even really matters. Wasn’t the LDS church thinking about forming their own scouting program of some sort?

Please provide the scientific evidence that there are only 2 sexes. Within that explanation please justify your rigid concept of sexual dimorphism in contrast to:
1) The readily available scientific data regarding intersex (phenotypic and genotypic expressions)
2) The commonality of non-binary chromosomal types like sex polysomies and monosomies.
3) Centuries of world cultures recognizing non-binary sex and gender roles.
4) The documented cases in animals of non-binary sex like sequential hermaphrodites, etc, AND unconforming gender roles within some species.
Would love to see that explanation as it clearly is not consistent with anything resembling biology, neuroscience or social scientific findings of the last 30 years.

We have called people with XY chromosomes male and people with XX chromosomes female. But that only accounts for two of the numerous other genotypes that exist outside our binary descriptors. These genotypes exist in noticeable across every human society. XXY exists in about 1 out of 1,000 births. There are ton of other chromosomal combinations that don’t cooperate with the overly simplistic binary sex descriptors we use. And then there are the phenotypes, what was commonly called hermaphrodites. We know babies in the US are born intersex enough to warrant its own field of research and laws that allowed doctors to make the medical decision to surgically assign sex without parental consent. When you include the diversity physical types and genotypes we find that about 1 out of every 100 births doesn’t conform to male or female descriptors.
This has been known since at least the 50s and well documented. You don’t know the biological, genetic or anatomical science if you are trying to defend such antiquated ideas. And the study of gender has highlighted multiple types of expression affected by multiple variables (well beyond the nurture vs nature dichotomy you have probably heard of). I could dig deeper into the science but I am going to guess you will engage in some type of illogical and pseudoscientific rebuttal.
I would recommend you read some real science on the issue before trying to convince a person who has a relevant college degree that 50+ years of scientific evidence is invalid and that your rigid binary is anything more than a medical invention that has long lived passed its usefulness and ethical application.

Well, I don’t know about your statistics here. No doubt that mother nature produces a lot of anomalies and non-sexable and hermaphrodite creatures. These are freaks of nature and in the natural world they would more than likely be a genetic dead end because they’d not be capable of reproducing. It’s a messy world when it comes to birth defects and genetic anomalies and mutations and such. If leftists want to try and normalize hermaphrodites and other such anomalies that’s their prerogative, but they’ll always be freaks of nature, and I’m not even using the term freaks of nature as a derogatory. Actually many in the “intersex” category can and do reproduce. Calling them freaks isn’t related to Science but your personal, value based assumption. They array of non-binary genetic and chromosomal arrangements are even considered a biological mutation as that is a term normally used to describe a genetic change, ie on an existing framework. The intersex and hermaphrodite genetics are the original framework at conception. Anamolies is less loaded but is only relevant to the way we choose to label our observations of the world. The clear reality is human sex exists in a spectrum even if the majority fit within the classic binary. Most, but not all. The binary existed long before modern Science could genetically map humans and has shown itself to not be accurate to life’s complexity. Which includes non-binary people able to live happy and productive lives, including bearing children.
Individuals like John can call them whatever they want but can’t just co-opt scientific terms without being called out. This is just one of the rather eloquent charts that explains how complex sex determination is and how real non-binary genotypes and phenotypes are in humans. Even your notion notion of from conception to adulthood doesn’t hold up to empirical observation and analysis. There are several types of trajectories that appear to be one sex at birth but at puberty a cascade of hormones or other factors affect how one sexually matures into an intersex category. And that doesn’t include all of the individuals whose genetic makeup at birth are at best sexually ambiguous and/or contain the sexual organs of both sexes.
The DSM-5 is where gender dysmorphia comes from and it doesn’t recognize it as a pathology but a form of individual distress that comes from the experience. Any respectable professional doesn’t treat transgender identifying individual (not the same as intersex) in the way you pejoratively use the phrase “mental disorder”. Bike, sometimes I think you get lost in your own little world sometimes. The leftists want to normalize what is essentially a birth defect? I’d say a person is either a man, a woman, or defective in some way. I understand some leftists want to be all inclusive or whatever, but some people are just defective. Life isn’t fair for them, I get it. But there really is no reason that they should be taking pride in their defectiveness. I also don’t believe they should be using advanced technology to assist them to breed and pass on their defective DNA. If they can breed naturally, obviously they can be classified as male or female. You are right about the raw numbers but that actually supports my initial claim. The reality is the underlying factor is “men” without a ton of difference between heterosexual or homosexual factors. So if we were really concerned about letting the “fox in the hen house” then measures would be placed on men accessing kids in general. Something like 95% of all sexual assaults on kids are perpetuated by men. But such a measure would be draconian as most men don’t commit pedophilia as its a very unique issue. Given we don’t consequence all men for the actions of a minority of them it is consistent and fair to do the same thing with the subcategories which have relatively minute affect.
Society keeps conflating homosexuality with pedophilia though. Its ignorance and scapegoating. Such misinformed discrimination doesn’t meaningfully prevent sexual assault on minors. The reality is your young boys are just as safe with heterosexual leaders as they are with homosexual leaders. In fact, if they allowed homosexuals leaders they would all have to go through the same background checks which is fair and appropriate. Anything else is just plain prejudice.

I see nothing anymore “cringeworthy” than a leader that is heterosexual. Have known plenty of homosexual men that could easily teach kids how to live up to the scout law. Haven’t seen any reason they can’t provide that leadership to the same level and quality as other men. Reality is there sexuality has nothing to do with that equation and skill. You must be on guard and be aware of letting your children go places. The moment you feel that your child is safe, is the moment something will happen.
