ST. GEORGE – Both Dixie and Snow Canyon won Thursday to stay tied atop the Region 9 volleyball standings. Canyon View beat cross-town rival Cedar in the other region matchup. Below are summaries of Thursday night’s action:

Snow Canyon 3, Hurricane 0

The Lady Tigers fell to the other hot team in Region 9. Hurricane traveled to Snow Canyon and lost in straight sets 25-18, 25-20, 25-14.

“Sammi Johnston shows up to play for every match,” SC coach Ryan Rarick said. “She led the way with 13 kills tonight, but most impressive was her nine service aces on only 18 serves. Hallie Remund also had a great night. Along with her eight kills, she had a .462 hitting percentage.”

Additionally, Lizzy Rowland had nine kills. Addie Tauanuu had 26 assists. Jael Wilde led the team with 11 digs. Rowland, Remund, Sophie Robinson and Savannah North had two blocks apiece.

“Hurricane put a lot of pressure on us with their serve and our girls had to battle through some adversity to come out with the win,” Rarick said. “We had some especially tight points during the second set. We were able to pull ahead and push leads when the game got tight. We are improving with each match.”

For the Lady Tigers, London Gubler led the team with five service aces. Kena Carter and Jeanette Cram had three apiece. Emily Swyers led the team with nine digs. Abbie Elison and Hailey Homer had five and four digs, respectively.

“We got solid blocking from our setters and middles tonight,” Hurricane head coach Content Marshall said. “We saw a lot of improvement. We still have many areas to work on.”

Snow Canyon will travel north this weekend to participate in the Wasatch Festival Tournament hosted by Skyridge High School in Lehi. With the win the Lady Warriors move to 3-0 in region and 4-1 overall. Hurricane falls to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in region play. The Lady Tigers will join Snow Canyon in the Wasatch Festival Tournament.

Dixie 3, Pine View 1

Dixie traveled to Pine View and got a victory on the Lady Panthers home court in four sets 25-18, 22-25, 25-12, 25-20. Dixie, the Region 9 preseason favorites, has started the region in impressive fashion with its third win. The last two have come against the teams directly behind them in the preseason poll.

Tyler Stilson led the Flyers with 10 service aces, 14 digs and 12 kills. Ella Burrows led the team with 10 blocks and also recorded six aces and four kills.

“Pine View plays very scrappy and it’s a dogfight every time we play them,” Dixie head coach Stacy Leavitt said. “We lost focus in the second set, but recovered in the next two. It was a learning lesson. We need to stay focused and earn the points.”

Dixie moves to 3-0 in region play and 8-2 overall. The Lady Flyers will play again next Thursday at Cedar. Pine View moves to 1-2 in region and 15-7 overall. The Lady Panthers will host Desert Hills on Tuesday night.

Canyon View 3, Cedar 1

The Lady Falcons triumphed over Cedar on the Lady Reds home court to grab bragging rights, at least until they play again in October. Canyon View fell in the first set, but then won the next three 16-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-16.

“After losing the first set, we knew we had to communicate better and play as a team,” said Canyon View head coach Monica Jensen. “We had to be ready for every ball. Seniors Brielle Fullmer and Lorien Colbert did a good job getting the team to play together. Malia Vasi played great tonight and we got good support from Shelbi Nicholl with her play on attack.”

Eowyn Colbert led the team with nine kills. Vasi had 16 assists, 26 digs and three service aces.

“We started strong offensively,” Cedar head coach Nicole Anglin said. “But after taking the first set, we lost momentum. We did see some new hands tonight from freshmen Lily Barnes. We needed her when our setter went down in the middle of the third set. She played well.”

Individually for Cedar, Japrix Weaver had eight kills and three service aces. Dream Weaver had four digs. Shaun Bauman had seven digs.

Canyon View moves to 7-6 overall and 1-1 in Region 9. The Lady Falcons will travel to Hurricane on Tuesday night. Cedar falls to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in region. The Lady Reds will travel to Snow Canyon on Tuesday night.
