ST. GEORGE – Five Region 9 teams participated in the Dixie Fly High Tournament this weekend and all five left the tournament with more wins than losses. Below are team summaries on their performances in the tournament Friday and Saturday:

Canyon View

The Lady Falcons not only picked up their first wins of the season in the Dixie Fly High Tournament but they ran the bracket in the bronze category to walk away with some hardware.

“We improved with each game,” said Canyon View head coach Monica Jensen. “We are playing better as a team. Lorien and Malia both made great assists and kills from the right side. Camry and Brielle were strong on the outside and played the opponents’ tips well. Eowyn and Jordan were strong in the middle, both on block and attack. Shayla stepped up and brought great balance to the team with her great serving and digs.”

The Falcons went 3-3 in pool play before winning all three games in their tournament bracket. Canyon View now sits at 6-5 on the year. The Falcons will play next at Richfield on Thursday before beginning region play with a home game against Snow Canyon on Sept. 5.

Cedar

Cedar also had a successful tournament. After going 5-1 in pool play, the Lady Reds entered the bronze bracket as the No. 1-seed. They won their first game but lost to Canyon View in an elimination game.

“Japrix and Dream Weaver had great tournament play,” said Cedar head coach Nicole Anglin. “Japrix led the team in kills while Dream led the team in digs. Denim Henkel ran the court well and kept opponents guessing on offense. We got great consistency from Brittnie Simcox with her passing and serving.”

Cedar improved to 6-3 overall. The Lady Reds will play at Juab on Tuesday night.

Pine View

The Lady Panthers went undefeated through pool play and advanced all the way to the championship match in the gold bracket before falling to West.

Pine View is now 14-5 on the season. The Panthers will have a break now before beginning region play with a game at Snow Canyon on Aug. 31.

Hurricane

Hurricane went 4-2 in pool play, but then lost in the first round of their bracket.

“Emily Swyers and McKena Carter had good tournament play,” said Hurricane head coach Content Marshall. “We saw a lot of good moments, but we will need to have more improvement and consistency if we are going to compete in region play.”

The Lady Tigers improved to 4-4 on the season. They will next play on Aug. 31 when they will host Dixie.

Dixie

The host school went 5-1 in pool play. The tournament was the first action of the season for the Lady Flyers. They were eliminated in the semifinals by West in the gold bracket.

“The girls looked good for our first outing,” said Dixie head coach Stacy Leavitt. “It was good to evaluate and discern our strengths and weaknesses. We need to do some more work. The girls are ready to bear down and improve. Tyler Stilson, Brynn Eardley and Lauren Beatty were all huge weapons for us this weekend. Ella Burrows was a huge factor blocking.”

Dixie will travel to Spanish Fork on Tuesday before beginning region play at Hurricane two nights later.
