LOGAN — Saturday was the final day for Region 9 teams to fix mistakes and find key players before region play begins on Tuesday. The Dixie Flyers and Cedar Lady Reds were the only teams in action.

The Flyers tied (1-1) against the newest high school in Utah, the Green Canyon Wolves, to bring their record to 0-2-1. Cedar was up at Bountiful, with no score reported.

Flyers first-year head coach Sam Gibbs said in an email, “We really enjoyed playing some high caliber opponents. This preseason allowed us to test ourselves each night.”

The Flyers played Utah girls soccer dynasty Davis, a Ridgeline team that made it to the semifinals last year, and the newcomer Wolves, who should surely be a force not to underestimate during this preseason. They were outscored 8-1.

“We have had a lot of opportunities and have not scored as often as we should have,” Gibbs said. “I look forward to seeing which one of these talented players steps up.

“We haven’t put together 80 minutes of dominant soccer yet, but we have played really well overall. I am very proud of our team and their development so far.”

The Flyers have been plagued by injury so far this year, as Lindsey Barben, Kelcee Call and McKenna McAllister have been nursing various injuries.

“I am hopeful that (they) will be the missing pieces for us,” Gibbs said. “Most of the players on the team got some quality minutes, which will help us with depth as the season progresses. We are a pretty deep team, which is exciting.”

Although the Flyers did not make it to the playoffs last year, the team expects to be there this year.

“We hope to surprise a couple teams,” Gibbs said.”I expect us to win some games and secure a spot in the postseason. From there, it takes four strong games and a little luck. We are capable of that.”

The Flyers start region play by taking on the Pine View Panthers at Dixie High School on Tuesday.
