No Filter: Sleepover at Switchpoint

FEATURE – As Christmas approaches and presents begin to pile up under trees in warm homes with fires burning, it’s a good time to remember those who face some of life’s most basic struggles – needing a roof overhead, a leg up to get on their feet, a warm meal.

In this “No Filter Show” flashback, co-hosts Paul Ford and Grady Sinclair spend time including an overnight at Switchpoint Community Resource Center in St. George, enjoying conversation and input from its guests, workers and administration.

I learned an interesting thing about Switchpoint. Apparently they are constantly operating above capacity already, and there is actually a massive wait list of people wanting to live there. So for anyone who has just run into a hard time and is in desperate need of shelter they will most likely turn you away. I find it a bit disturbing. The area could probably easily utilize a homeless shelter 5x larger or more, and that’s not taking into account all the down-and-out folks that would drift in from other places to use the service. So for all the wealthy retirees in their big boxy stucco McMansions in this area there is a lot more poverty than one would expect.

Every major city in the country is having the same problem. the homeless situation is always on the. social front page this time of year. but as soon as spring gets here you won’t hear about it.
