“It is a community event,” Calvary Chapel Pastor Rick Nerud said. “It is for the community. Everyone in the community is invited, it’s a non-denominational service.”

Nerud said he will give a special short message then read the Christmas story from the Bible. Familiar Christmas carols will be sung and a children’s choir will perform. Music will be provided by a contemporary worship music team, leading the congregation in the songs of the season.

“The idea is to hear more of them (the congregation) and less of us,” Nerud said, laughing.

Attendance the last few years has averaged around 2,000 people, the pastor said.

“It’s become a tradition for many families now. This is the 14th year … It’s really fun to hear the stories. I talk to people before the service and after the service and ask them if they’ve come before. You just hear all kinds of really neat stories.”

This year’s theme for the service is “Peace on Earth,” taken from the gospel of Luke.

“I think we, as a nation, could use a little peace,” Nerud said. “It was particularly chosen for this time, a pretty tumultuous time in our nation. The desire is to bring the peace of God into individual hearts.”
