ST. GEORGE — The Learning Center for Families recently recognized Dixie State University’s dental hygiene program with “The Learning Center for Families Nonprofit Partner” award for providing service to low-income families.

“We just really appreciate The Learning Center for Families as a partner,” Patricia Wintch, interim dean of Dixie State’s School of Health Sciences, said. “Being able to serve and interact with community members enriches the students’ experience.”

Through their partnership with The Learning Center for Families, a nonprofit health, social service and school readiness agency that serves families in Washington County and the Arizona Strip, Dixie State’s dental hygiene program provides essential dental care to low-income families within the community.

The dental hygiene program places a special emphasis on service. The program seeks not only to develop dental hygienists with the highest professional standards through academic and experiential curriculum but to also create outstanding citizens through the emphasis in service.

Students also work in the Dixie State University Dental Hygiene Clinic, an educational facility that is open to the public, to provide oral health care education and dental hygiene services under faculty supervision. Additionally, students use Dixie State’s Mobile Dental Hygiene Clinic to offer X-rays, screenings and cleanings to home-bound patients.
